About Rangihau Ranch in Thamescoromandel

Rangihau Ranch is located in the idyllic Coromandel, providing accommodation and horse treks through some of the most stunning landscape on offer in New Zealand.

The picturesque bush-clad hills and valleys of Coroglen hide a colourful pioneering history. Giant Kauri once stood here, gold prospectors and gum diggers prospered amidst these hills.

Today you can ride through this beautiful and historic landscape from Rangihau Ranch.

One of 30 well conditioned trek horses will take you up the original packhorse trail known as the Gentle Annie, to some of the most spectacular scenery on the Coromandel Peninsula. Rugged ranges, native bush and rolling farmland unfold before you while Whitianga harbour sparkles in the distance.

Your trek can last 1, 1 1/2 or 2 hours and must be booked in advance. There are horses to suit all abilities. For preschoolers there are quiet lead-rein ponies to take on a1\2 hour track. Treks run all year round though may be weather dependent.

So saddle up and ride through this beautiful and historic countryside at Rangihau Ranch, home of the real NZ ride.

COROGLEN HISTORY

In the early 1800s Gumtown (Coroglen) was described as a bustling village of timber - millers, bushmen, gumdiggers and goldminers. A small steamer called by three times a week from Whitianga and each day up to fifty pack horses could be seen going up the Gentle Annie track to the camps in the surrounding hills.

Gumtown was the frontier township for the many timber camps in the interior. During the era of kauri timber and kauri gum, tremendous log drives came down the Waiwawa river from the extensive forests. It has been calculated that if all of the kauri logs that have passed through Gumtown were placed end to end they would stretch from Auckland to Invercargill.

Today Coroglen (officially changed to Coroglen in 1922) is the centre of a farming community, and there is little to remind the traveller of the township in its hayday.
